FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 21rd

The Council met at 7.31) p.m. Present Messrs G. A. Perry (.Mayor), A. R, Elcock, T. W. Duff, I). J. Evans, W. Jeffries, A. C. Armstrong, G. Hoinj:, and Dr Teiclielnumn.

Apologies for absence were received from Messrs' E. W. Ilccnaii and J. King. The minutes were confirmed and correspondence approved.

INWA RI) n )RR ESPONDENCE

From the lion, the -Minister ol Public Works, Wellington, intimating that the matter of completion of the Enina ra Junction-Flowery Creek Coast road lias been fully investigated, and that the expenditure of the amount required to complete the construction is at the present juncture unwarranted, but it is considered that certain improvements are necessary between Kmnnra and Chesterfield, and that an item of .£2)00, C2 for pound, was included on the current estimates.—Received.

From Messrs G. G. Tolhurst and Son, Wellington, intimating that they had sums from 1:2,000 to UIO.ODD to lend to local authorities at Imm o V pei- cent to o;| per cent, depending on the nature of security.—-Received. From the Chairman, No. 12 District Highways Council, forwarding annual report of .Main Highways Hom'd. —Received.

From the Clerk, Wsetlnnd County Council, intimating that County Council have agreed to pumping station lor swimming baths remaining on the County site.—Received and accepted. From J. J. From Town Clerk, Wairoa Borough Council, asking lor particulars of local charges for extraordinary water supply.—Received ; to be supplied. From Under-Secretary, Mines Department, Wellington, asking loi information respecting amount contributed by Council towards development ol mining, under Section -120 and 421 ol the .Mining Act. — Received ; I own Clerk to reply. . , From N.Z. Refrigerating Coy.. Christchurch, intimating that 101 carcases of sheep were delivered into Hokitika during the month of October. 1028.—Received. .

From Secretary, Hokitika Fire'Rrigiule, intimating that Fire Brigade approve of Council's proposal lor tire plug. Cass Square, and expressing thank's for assistance. —Received: Messrs Armstrong and Heinz were authorised to confer with the lirigadt in reference to turning off ol the watei suddenly.

Mr Heinz, referring to the water supply, suggested the installing ot a pressure valve and two relict valves would be cf decided value. .It was de ruled-- that the sub-committee refer to this subject also.

From. Hon. Secretary, Swimming Club, supplying report and balance sheet, and thanking Council for handsome donation of C3O towards improvement of the baths.—Received.

RESF.R VKS COMMITTEE.

By resolution dated the 26th ultimo, the Reserves Committee were directed to report on No. 1 playing field, Cass Square. Ihe Reserves Committee, consisting of Councillors I eichelmann. Duff, Hetman, and myself, together with the foreman, inspected the playing field yesterday, and we lonnd that it is in a very unsatisfactory condition, and we recommend that when the streets arc being graded that 100 yards of street cleanings and also 100 yards of beach sand bo used for filling the depressions in tlm playing field, the estimated cost being 215.

Other matters requiring prompt at tention are:-

Large entrance gate mid-way in Weld Street should he repaired, small gate, Wold and Beale.v Streets, should be renewed, a door should be provided for latrine, the lettering on the cenotaph should he re-gilded; the total estimated cost is 210.

The Committee consider that the employment ol a part-time caretaker for the reserves is not satislaetory, as was expected, and we recommend the employment of a full-time workman, whose spare time could be utilised by the Overseer, as thought desirable, on general works. D. J. EVANS, Chairman, Reserves Committee. Received ; considered clause bj clause and adopted, Mr Jeffries dissenting to the last clause. The Mayor moved that specifications be drawn up and tenders invited foi cartage of pipes and distribution along lvanieri Lake Road. Seconded by Air Heinz and carried. The Council rose at 8.20 p.m.
