BOOKIE FINED £2O. (By Telegraph—Press Association). AUCKLAND, Nov. 22. Charged with carrying on the business of a bookmaker, Leslie George Donaldson, aged 29, was fined £2O in the Magistrate’s Court. 'Jne Chief-Detective said Donaldson was a “silver bettor” carrying on in a small way, principally among wharf labourers. He had l>een fined £2O for a similar offence previously. Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., in imposing tho fine, gave accused two weeks in which to pay it.

MAN FOUND HANGING

AUCKLAND, November 22

A builder named James Willis, aged 13, married, was found dead, hanging from a strap in a room in a house in which he stayed.

At the inquest a verdict of death by hanging was returned. Evidence wq.s given by deceased’s brother-in-law, that deceased, who stayed at his house, had been in a slightly deranged state, and had been strange in bis actions for some time past.

POISONED BY GAS

WELLINGTON, November 23

The free ambulance made a rush to the Public Hospital to save a life totlay. The patient was J. Sherwood, a widower, aged 02, of 389 Adelaide Road, suffering severely from the effects of gas poisoning.

When Mr J. Coutts, accompanied by Mr G. Maxfield, returned to his home, at the address mentioned, be noticed n smell of gas on entering the rear of the premises. Sherwood, who occupied n part of the bouse, was found lying on the floor near a gas ring. All the windows and doors were closed. A doctor wus hastily summoned, and after be bad given Sherwood an injection. the unconscious man was rushed to the hospital. The condition of Sherwood was stated to-night to be very serious.

ELDERLY COUPLE INJURED

INVERCARGILL. November 23

An accident, in which two elderly people were concerned, occurred this afternoon. A gig in which Mr and Mrs Middleton, of Otara, were driving was turning a corner when it capsized, apparently as the result of one of the wheels mounting the traffic dome, and the occupants were thrown out. .Mrs Middleton, who is 75 years of age, sustained an injury to her arm, a out on her forehead and seveial liruises, and was severely shaken. She was taken into the Southland Hospital for treatment. Mr Middleton was not injured sufficiently to necessitate attention at the liosipal.

CASHEL STREET FIRE,

CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 22. A primus stove exploded and caused a fire,, which destroyed £250 Worth of floor polishing apparatus, in the “Lite Work” Floor Polishing Coy’s premises, 170 Cashel Street, this after-

noon. One of the employees was engaged in unpacking a quantity of polishers and accessories. He had ceased temporarily, to boil water on a primus stove, which exploded and the kerosene flamed up. Some of the burning kerosene fired the waste in which the .roods were packed. Much material was damaged and destroyed before the Brigade extinguished the fire with chemicals.

INQUEST VERDICT. AUCKLAND, November 23. Dressed in a nightdress, singlet, and stockings, the body of Airs Elizabeth May Bradney was Ifound on the floor of a passage by her 11-year-old daughter, on the evening of November 11th. , . , Giving evidence at the conclusion or the inquest this morning, the girl said she found her mother when she came in from playing, and she at once ran to a neighbour. Sergeant Flannigan said there was no letter found which would indicate that a message -was left for anybody. Detective Kelly said there were no marks which showed violence. l'ie husband had gone to his work at 2 o’clock that afternoon. “Mrs Bradney died from acute septicaemia, following a condition probnblv brought about by her own act, was the verdict of Coroner Hunt.
