LORD BIRKENHEAD’S PENSION

In tbe Commons, reference was made to Lord Birkenhead’s pension (caibled 30th November) in the course of a debate on a Bill increasing the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, Air Hudson said: —“We are confronted with one of those judges selling himself for auction, seeking positions, making it clear lie is out for a great deal more than lie lias hitherto received. AYe should make it. dear there is no place for such a man in the High Court in future. These tilings make people think. I must not be taken as in the least criticising Lord Birkenhead, who lias taken a course to which lie is perfectly entitled, as far as tile rules of constitutional practice arc concerned. 'Pile best cheek on errors of judgment should lie public opinion.” Air Wedgwood Bonn said Lord Birkenhead enjoyed judicial emoluments and earned commercial emoluments at the same time.
Air’Tuskip’ 'did not agree that the pension was' in consideration of judicial duties being performed at the present time.
