TENDON CUT

PRINCE HUMPHREY’S INJURY.

MAY NOT RACE AGAIN

AUCKLAND. Nov. 19,

It is doubtful whether the brilliant New Zealand horse, Prince Humphrey, will over race again. This news was brought to Auckland hv the owner. Mr C. G. Macindoe, who stated that as the result of the injuries received during the running of the Victorian Derby Prince Humphrey was now in the hands of a veterinary surgeon at Molamrne. “Prince Humphrey was galloped on right at the beginning of the race for tin 1 Derby and bis near hind tendon was completely severed,” Air Meindoe stated. “Afterwards it appeared as if (m> tendon had been cut with a razor. “Had Prince Humphrey not been injured Air Aleindoe is convinced ho would have won the race, defeating Strcplion. “Prince Humphrey was in much hotter form than when he won the A.J.O. Derby,” lie stated. “Jamieson had him in beautiful trim and lie was keenly disappointed when the horse was injured. I must say this regret was general In spite of the injury, which must have pained him dreadfully Prince Humphrey ran a great race. The veterinary surgeon stated afterwards that ho did not know how the horse kept up and attributed it to his pluck.”

The race for the A.J.O. Derby was run in faster time than was the Victorian Derby, and this convinces Air Macindoe as much as anything that Prince Humphrey would have beaten the field. He was also taking into consideration the fact that Prince Humphrey was in better form. Dismissing the future of his horse, Mr .Meindoe said it was in the. lap of the gods. He was anxiously awaiting word from Melbourne. In any case, as soon as bis horse was well enough to travel he would be brought hack to New Zealand. Mr .Meindoe commented on his had luck. Tie recalled also, that bis horse, Ti Tree, was injured on the ship when travelling from New Zeaaiul to Australia.

Discussing racing in Australia, generally. Air Meindoe said lie considered the English bred horse. Gothic, the most brilliant performer in the Commonwealth to-day. As far as lie eould see there was no other horse to touch Gothic when in form.
