The Town Clerk was authorised to arrange with the County Council tor an easement of a small area on which the baths pumping plant is installed. WATERWORKS. The Mayor took the opportunity to refer to the enquiries having been in progress for some time past in regard to the water works, stating that most of the information desired was, now to hand and the remainder would be available in the course of a few days. When this came to hand he proposed to call the Waterworks Committee together and alter giving, full consideration to the various aspects they would report to the Council which could then derinilely decide on the course of action to be followed. As a result of the enquiries made he was of the opinion mat tne Hume Pipe Company pipes were the most suitable and the cheapest for the first section at the lake, which had to be renewed. He had found tnat the cost of 6984 feet of 9 inch pipes would he £IOB2 Us 3d. while for 10 inch pipes the cost would be £1302. The engineers, Messrs Holmes and Son, had recommended the increase in size from 8 inch as at present, to 9 inch. As a result of investigation made it was found that the water coming into the pipeline trum the penstock at lvanieri forks was sufficient to supply the town with water, so there would be no difficulty experienced when it was necessary to cut off the Lake supply for the purpose of carrying out the renewal operations for the first stage. A general discussion followed in the course of which Mr King urged that the new line should be laid on the course as outlined previously by the Foreman which was an easier one. The Mayor pointed out that the engineers had reported on this aspect, pointing out that though it was a more suitable one than tne present one it would cost far more to la.y the new line over that country as

most of the excavation was already made on the old line, and it would save considerable expense. After Mr Jeffries had referred to the previous decision of the Council to carry out this section as the most needed owing to its unstable condition and Dr Teichelmanu had mentioned several matters requiring looking into by the Waterworks Committee, of which lie is a member, the discussion ended, the -Mayor signifying that the Committee would be called together as soon as the remainder of the information they were expecting came to band and their decision would then come before the Council for final ratification.

It was mentioned that the I reinsure: had arranged in this year s estimate! for an expenditure of £I.OOO, and tlm could he spent without pressing tot heavily cm the funds of the C ouncil i! care were shown in regard to the otlic general expenditure. Ibis wrs accept ocl as a. very satisfactory position. -ne Council then adjourned at B.lc
