WANAKA NOTES

(From a Correspondent) Air J. Horn, MiP., the retiring member, has been very successful with votes. There, is £IOOO on the-estimates for the track from Hawea to Aliakaroa, to he used to make the present’ track suitable for wheel traffic. There is also £2OO for the Haast- Pass Track as far as the Saddle. Alessrs James Tourist Service are importing Jack donkeys for mule breeding purposes. Air Coates lias promised to look into the representations made by a local resident, namely, to include the several unique freaks of nature to be seen a little off the beaten track; also the Copeland and far section of the Warn aka-Haast Pass-Franz Josef Track, in the programme of the Publicity Department’s oineipatographic visit ,to -the district.

The “Cromwell Argus” Makarba correspondent writes: —The Westland Tourist Society have a large publicity programme for the approaching season, but it is regrettable to learn they have yet to realise that they have valuable attractions in the far south of their province. AYhile lack of finance may have something to do with their restricted activities in the far south, it may he found in the fact that members of this body, and Westlanders general--ly, know little or nothing of their valuable scenic attractions in the south'. The day is fast approaching when Wanaka will become the front door to all these beauty spots, over which tourists will cross in ever increasing numbers, including the southern lakes in the same itinerary. The first cricket match of the seasob was played here on Saturday against a visiting team representing Hawea Flat. The visitors secured an easy victory The scores were Makaroa 21, Hawea Flat 104. The local team put up a much better performance in the second innings which were interrupted by dusk.
