The Executive' Committee ; of the Trentham Scholarship War Fund, in its eighth report, presented to 1 the annual meeting, ' stated that 287 'applications were ’ received for : bdrSaries as compared with 228 in the previous year. The following awards 'were made Renewals 145 (£3125);’ new awards. 89 (£1900) * declined, 53; total. 287 (£5025).

‘ “The excess of expenditure over income for the year amounted to £1539, 4s lOd, and this, after taking into account the contribution made by the Canteen and Regimental Trust FundBoard amounting to £2OOO. “The balance-sheet shows that the assets of the fund are; Cash in hand and 'at hank, £233 14s fid : „ 011 denosit with the Public Trustee, £28,701 10s lid; total, £28,935 5s sd. “Since the inception of the fund, the sum of £27,275 16s has been paid to bursars, representing 978 bursaries awarded and affecting 455 children, and made up as follows;—Awarded 1.921, £970: 1922, £1728 15s; 1923, £2573 12s 2d; 1924. £3056 0s Id : 1925. £3477 7s 6d; 1926, £3558 15s; 1927, covering a period of sixteen months and equal to £5367 per annum, £/158 15s; 1928. £4752 10s; total, £27,275 V 6«. On the average, each of the 455 children has benefited to the extent of £59 18s.

“For the balance of the period the f ind is designed to cover (twelve years), the amount in the hands of the Public Trustee will, at the present rate of interest, 51 per cent., provide £3270 pei' annum.

“Once again the sincere thanks of the exec,utivo must be tendered to the Canteen and Regimental Trust Fund Board for the contributions made jto the fund during the past four years, Without this generous assistance it would have been impossible to meet the ever-growing demands'upon the fund. The contribution made this year amounted to £2OOO

“It is too early yet to estimate the requirements for the coming year, butthere is every indication that there will he no reduction in the number of claims made. A statement of the estimated amount required for the coming year will he submitted at a later date.

“The thanks of the executive are •i*o due to the various War Relief Associations throughout the Dominion. who very generously investigated all claims submitted to them, and who supply valuable information, which materially assists the executive in coming to decisions. The Education Department undertook a scrutiny of the progress reports of all Trentham bursars, and it is very gratifying to note that in nearly every case full advantage is being taken of the facilities given by the fund.
