HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 24th

The Council met at 7.20 p.m. Present:—Messrs G. A. Perry (Mayor), T. W. Duff, W. Jeffries, A. C. Armstrong, G. Heinz, E. W. Heenan, A. R. Elcock, J. King, D. J. Evans, and Dr Teichelmann. STATUTORY MEETING. The Auditor-General returned the annual balance sheet for the year ended 31st .March, 1928, duly certified to without exception. The -Mayor moved that the balance sheet be received and the mover authorised to sign same as settled. Seconded by Air Elcock and carried. Tile tender of the Guardian and Times Co. Ltd. for printing same at £6 10s was accepted. ORDINARY MEETING.

The minutes of the ordinary meeting were confirmed and outward correspondence was approved. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From the Secretary, Greymouth hand, applying for permit to render a concert in Princess Theatre at 8.30 p.m. on Sunday, the 2fith inst.—Received. The Mayor stated that he had enquired of members and had found that a majority had been against- the granting of the request, in accordance with the decision of the Council some time ago against the holding of Sunday entertainments. The action of the -Mayor was approved. From Municipal Association, forwarding copy of proceedings of 20th conference of delegates.—Received. From the New Zealand Refrigerating Coy., intimating that 84 sheep were delivered into Hokitika during the month of July, 1928.—Received.

From the Wanganui Harbour Board, asking for particulars of charges of slaughtering stock at the Hokitika Abattoirs, and whether rebates are made in respect of offal.—Received; Town Clerk to supply. From Miss Murdoch, and Messrs J. A. and John "Murdoch, junr. acknowledging resolution of sympathy.—Received.

From Commissioner of Crown Lands, re gravel reserve No. 801, Town of Hokitika.-—Received; adjacent owners to be informed of the position. From District Engineer, Railway Department, intimating that they had installed an electric pump, and will in future pump most cf the water required for railway purposes from a well at the engine shed; and, further, that the connection to the tanks near Weld Street will be disconnected, but that the other two connections will still be required.—Received ; consideration der l'erred pending enquiry. From William Wilson, agent for Miss L. D. Krakowsky, application to subdivide Sections 946, 947, 949, 1710, 1711, and north part of 1712.—Received and approved. From Under-Secretary, Department of Internal Affairs, Wellington, re expenditure incurred by local authorities in connection with jubilee celebrations. —Received.

From T. A. Breeze, Hampden Street, asking that water tables fronting his residence he cleared, and the footpath receive attention.—Received and referred to Works Committee. From Hon. Secretary, All Saints’ Hall Committee, asking for water scrvi«e connection with the new social hall in Fitedierbcrt Street.—Received and approved.

From Valuer-General, forwarding particulars of the values cdf rateable and non-rateahle lands within the Borough, as at the 31st March, 1928. Received.

From Sanitary Inspector, Public Health Department, Greymouth, reporting the number of infectious disease cases, and also the number of Sanitary Inspections for the months of June and July, 1928.—Received. From Sanitary Inspector, in the latter report, asking that he he informed whenever wood-box drains in the Borough streets are replaced with concrete pipes, so that he can see that connections of house drains are made in accordance with the by-law.—Received.

From Sanitary Inspector, Greymouth, notifying a case of diphtheria ! and one case of scarlet fever, and directing that a notice be served on one owner to effect repairs.—Received. From Town Clerk, Mosgiel, asking that in regard to Hospital and Charitable Aid Board levies and management, that this Council pass the following resolutions which should be forwarded | to the member if or this district:-—(1) “ That the Government should devise some new method of raising this rate.” (2) “That every contributing body should have more direct representation on the particular Hospital Board for which the rate is to be levied.”—Received. From Secretary, Hokitika Harbour Board, forwarding copy of resolution, striking harbour rates for the year ending the Ist October, 1927, and ending on the 30th September, 192,3. The harbour rate struck is 2d in the C oil the unimproved value of all rateable property within the borough of Hokitika, and is payable on the 26th September, 1923. and subject to 5 per cent rebate if paid within thirty days.—Received. REPORTS. From Jubilee Committee reporting on proposed procedure.—Received. Accounts amounting to £466 Is 4d were passed for payment. The Treasurer reported : —Receipts, '£lß3 6s lOd, payments £lB7 13s 3d, credit balance £520 2s lid.—Received. The Mayor moved the formal resolu-

tions striking the rates for the year as previously approved totalling Is 2d (together with Harbour rate of 2d). Seconded by .Mr Elcock and carried, a rebate of 5 per cent to be made on all rates paid within thirty days.

The Mayor moved that Mr Gaylor be appointed inspector under the Plumbing Act. Seconded by Mr Armstrong and carried. It was resolved in accordance with the recommendation uf the Superintendent of the Fire Brigade to have the necessary repairs effected to the well in front of the Town Hall. This concluded the meeting.
