The Auckland touring team defeated South Canterbury to-day by 21points to 14, in the presence of 3,009. The visitors started off at a great pace, and gave the impression they would run up a big score, but they found the local forwards a much tougher proposition than was expected. Auckland had the heavier pack, but they held the advantage in the line-outs, however, and from these their backs got most of their opportunities. The latter combined well in the first half, but in the second session, when they had the sun behind them, their handling was very patchy. The tackling of the home forwards and that of the local full-back was very sound, and this kept the score down.

ASHBURTON BEAT SOUTHLAND. ASHBURTON, August 8. Southland Rugby touring team played the second match of tlieir tour today, being defeated by Ashburton County team by 14 to 13, after a bright, fast game. The teams were evenly matched. The half time score was eight all. Ashburton aeie aggressive most of the time, and showed a sound defence, repelling repeated attacks. The visitors got the ball away from all but two of a large number of serums. The tackling for the most part was deadly on both sides, two men from each side went off with injuries. There was not a let-up in pace from start to finish. LEAGUE FOOTBALL. AUCKLAND, Aug. 8. Before an attendance of fifteen thousand, and under ideal conditions, the English League team to-day defeated

the Auckland Provincial team by 14 points to nine. The original Provincial team underwent several changes oil account of some of the South Auckland players hieing unavailable. With one exception all of the' players belonged to Auckland. The game proved a very fast and open one, a feature being the passing movements by tlio English hacks. However, had the provincial team’s fiveeighths combined at all well, England would probably have been defeated.
