HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

FRIDAY, AIAY 23th

The Council met at 7.30 p.m. I’res outMeSsrs 0. A. Perry (Mayor), AV Jeffries, A. R. Elcock, 0. Heinz, D. J Evans, J. King, E. AY. Median, A. C. Armstrong and Dr Teiehelmann Ihe minutes were confirmed and outward correspondence approved. IN WAR D CORRESPONDENCE. ayatek supply.

From R. AA r . Holmes and Son, Wellington, as follows: In reply to your memo of the lath instant. The most important work is that which will ensure an adequate supply °f water lor the longest period. Down to the junctions of the two su I , Plv pipes near the Kanieri Power House f here arc two chances against failure and one of the sources of sup ply is being maintained by the Gold Dredging Company while the pipe direct from the lake is under a low head for the greater part of the dis-

tance so is fairly easy to maintain if it became absolutely neeessnrv.

Below the junction there is only one pipe and it is under a high pressure. II there is a. failure in this main between the junction and the reservoir, the supply to the town is not interrupted for some time if there is a supply in the reservoir. If the reservoir is full then there is about two day’s supply for the town at a reasonable demand per head. The gives ample time to effect temporary repairs to the main.

The reservoir is its present state is of very little use and it cannot lie repaired by temporary methods.

Iho main below the junction can be temporarily repaired by damping the pipes together where the wire has completely Jailed, with iron bands. H, say, AD or GO bands arc obtained and placed on the pipes where there are the worst signs of failure, or keep on hand to be used in case of failure, and a dose inspection made of the pipe at frequent intervals, then there should not be any serious stoppage of the supply. Those bands will always be useful while there are any G-indi pipes in the town reticulation or supply main, so the money expended on their purchase will not lie wasted.

It appears to us that the best thing to do, as finances arc naturally limited if the work is to be done out of rev-

enue, is to repair the reservoir during

the winter when the demand for water is usually the least. By doing this a continuous supply would ho ensured during next summer. Also, if the work is laid out and executed in a suitable order, the reservoir could be

placed in partial commission should sufficient funds be found to be not available as the work proceeded. If the pipes are ordered, their cost

has to be met and if may be found that there are not funds to completely lay them, owing to unforeseen circumstances. so the supply would not be improved for the time being in proportion to the monies expended. Taking all these points into consideration wo consider that the repairs to the reservoir should be undertaken as the first work and we recommend accordingly. —Received. It was mentioned that the temporary repairs to the reservoir bad been carried out but it was proposed that additional work be done to the bottom of the reservoir. It was resolved that the Foreman carry out this work as soon as possible after a careful review of the pipe-line bad been made, and that the -Mayor and Foreman interview the Manager of Kanieri Electric Ltd. with a view to hawing a full water supply at the Forks intake j while the repairs to the reservoir were in progress. ( Air Jeffries objected to any waste of ' money in tinkering at Ibo reservoir in view of the report of the Engineer, . who slated that an expenditure of over C] ,000 was involved.

The Mayor said if the reservoir couli ho put in such order for a cost o under ,£2O that would last for a yeai
