PIPE DRIVEN THROUGH GULLET

AVHANGAREI. Nov. 19

An unusual accident occurred at Portland on Thursday evening, to Norman Lightbnnd, aged 50 years, of Grove Street, Edendale. Auckland. He fell down a bank while smoking a. pipe. The' force of the fall drove the stem of his pipe through his gullet to its full extent, a distance of 21 inches, and then snapped off, inflicting a dangerous wound. Air operation was performed at the AVhangarei Hospital on Friday, and the stem removed. Tlie patient at present is making progress. DIED AFTER ARREST. CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 19. 'When Andrew Chilian was arrested oil November 12th, for drunkenness, lie was seen to he very ill, and a remand was granted until Tuesday next, in order that he might undergo medical treatment. On Friday the police were advised to get into touch with (lonian's relatives. This morning his death was reported from hospital. There is a possibility that the man’s name is Codlani, as a piece of paper among his belongings bears that name. Conhm told the nurse at the hospital that he had no relatives in New Zealand. The Coroner has ordered a postmortem examination. ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. AUCKLAND, Nov. 19. A man of about 02 years of age, named Frederick Sibbe, attempted to commit suicide by trying to throw himself off Grafton Bridge, at about half-past one. Two men who were crossing the bridge saw Sibbe climbing up on to tlio parapet. They ran to him and dragged him back, and held on to him until some other pedestrians came to their assistance.

Sibbe has only recently come to Auckland from AVellington. and had been drinking. He pleaded guilty at the Police Court to a charge of 'attempting to commit suicide. Senior Sorgt. McCarthy, in asking for a remand until Monday, said accused had been drinking, and he had been having difficulty in finding employment. A remand was granted.

FOUND HANGING. MASTERTON. Nov. 19. Isaac AVyber, aged GO, motor lorry driver, residing at 40 South Road, was found hanging in a wash-house this morning. Ho rose at six o’clock and two hours later his body was found hanging by a rope from one of the rafters. AVyber was mniTmd and had a. grown-up family. An inquest will be held on Afondav.

REMOVING BOUNDARY PEGS. WANGANUI, Nor. 19. At. the Supremo Court, Robert Joseph Clinton, fanner of Afaxwelltoivn, was fined €SO for removing boundary pegs, by Air Justice Ostler. On a. charge of stealing three sheep, the jury brought in a verdict of not guilty. ALLIANCE AND LICENSING POLL. AfASTERTON, Nov. 19. At a public meeting on Saturday evening, following the AYairarapaAfasterton Convention »f the New Zealand Alliance, it was resolved: “That this public meeting of Afasterton citizens urges the Premier to recommit the Licensing Bill, and allow Parliament tii finalise the legislation this session.”

BOOKMAKER CHARGED. AUCKLAND, Nov. 17.

A charge of carrying on the business of a bookmaker on August oth was preferred against Harry Marks in the Police Court to-day. William Henry Bonner said lie took a double from Marks at twenty pounds to five shillings on Beau Cavalier in tlie Grand National Steeplechase, and AA'harncliffe in the Grand National Hurdles. Both horses won, but when asked about paying out, Marks said he would pay when he pleased. They had had an argument, and witness said lie punched the accused. The following clay lie again asked the accused to pay him, and accused said witness was anything but a gentleman. localise he called at his house for the money. Evidence was given by the police regarding other alleged hookmaking transactions on the part of accused. Accused pleaded not guilty, reserved his defence,, and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial.

AVOAI EX BOOKAfAKERS. AUCKLAND, Nov. 19. Two women, who were alleged to be bookniaking, wore detected betting on tlie outside enclosure at the Otahuhu Trotting Club’.d meeting at Epsom, shortly after 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon. Both were admitted to bail, and will appear at the Police Court on Alonday morning. COAIPENSATION CLAIM. AUCKLAND, Nov. 19. The Auckland Compensation Court decided that the Auckland City Council shall pay £19.902 compensation to the G.O.C. Bus Service, and supplementary fleet taken over by order of the Supreme Court in August last, being £1(5,427 to the Afount Eden Afotor Omnibus Coy for 35 G.O.C. buses, with garage, etc.; £3475 for nine buses, garage, etc., formerly owned by 1L H. Hi eat t. The claimant liad asked for £39,495 and £8909 respectively, and Hie City Council had offered approximately £13,000. AVOOL SHED BURNT. GISBORNE, Nov. 21. A fire destroyed a wool-shed on Lawson Fields property at Waiinata A7allcy, with plant and 25 hales of wool.
