The chief objection to the petrol tax seems to he that the lire tax should ho withdrawn if the petrol tax is carried. But tile Government seems to think it will want Doth, for a time at least, if it is to carry out its policy. There is a iurther question as to exemptions, which are clearly to he further considered and require no notice here. The position is in a nutshell. To make the roads good needs money; all the money the Government can get out of the tax. If the roads are not made good, the ear will suffer extra wear and tear. — “Hawke’s Bav Herald.”
