U.S. ELECTION INTERESTS

Interest is being attracted in political circles by the poll of newspaper editors and political leaders throug iout the country conducted hy a political magazine, which forecasts the nomination of Smith (Democrat) as a Presidential candidate and Hoove (Republican). It is presumed that President Coolklge would not be an aspirant. Smitli received many times moio votes than any other, Senator Reed being second. \ . Hoover, however, maintained only a small lead over ex-Governor Lowde, of Illinois, as a Republican choice. PANAMA AVIATION. WASHINGTON, Nov. 19. It is understood the United States will resist the attempts by foreign commercial aviation services to establish bases in the Panama Canal zone and in Panama itself, and will reject the 10quest of Colombian Aero Maritime Company for such a privilege. The Company is financed hy German and Colombian capital, employees, equipment and aviators. Panama despatches state Panamians desire a base and point out the American attitude is one of objection only, while apparently no efforts are being made by American Ministers to establish a commercial air service hero. COMMERCIAL. NEW YORK, Nov. 19. Sterling cable transfers advanced to 487 13-16, the highest tiince 1914, with an extremely heavy turnover. The demand originated chiefly in London, The belief that gold will shortly move from New York to London has been strengthened.

TUNNEY VISITS COOLLIDGE. (Received this day at 10.15 a.mA WASHINGTON, Nov. 19. Gene Tunney visited President Coolidge to-day. The President told the champion he was impressed by the latter’s physical condition, hut he “looked more like a movie actor than a prize fighter.” Tunney told the President he would not go on the stage or sign a movie contract and this seemed to favourably impress President Coolidge.
