TIMBER YARD ABLAZE. SYDNEY. Nov. 18,

A fire at the Rosonficld Company's timber yard at Glelie, caused damage to the extent of £IOOO.

SOLOMONS’ EXPEDITION. SYDNEY, Nov. 18

Advices from Tulagai state that the Adelaide sailed for Australia. The naval forces and the majority of civil volunteers are now evacuated from Singapore. No fighting has occurred so far. Two outlaws were killed, one wounded and 12 captured.

The directors of Smith and Waddingtoti. motor body builders have decided to suspend trading operations temporarily, and the entire staff totalling between three and four hundred, has been paid off. The directors propose to reorganise the trading department. The result of trading options will he explained to shareholders when the future of the company will be decided.

FEDERAL FINANCE. CANBERRA, Nov. 19.

In the House of Representatives Mr Bruce in reply to a question said for the six months ended 30th September, the Commonwealth line of steamers lost £243,780 sterling. The vessels made a profit on trips to Australia, but losses on tho return voyages. The Minister of Customs said the tariff during the year 1925-26 yielded nearly forty million sterling, of which only about sixteen million was received from protective tariffs, the balance being made up of revenue duty collections.

DOUBLE TRAGEDY. PERTH", Nov. 19. The Kalgoorlie police have been notified of a tragedy in which two men were dead and a third arrested on a charge of murder at Norseman, lit is alleged, following an argument which occurred at a farm two men prepared to leave iu a motor truck, but one returned to the house where he was shot. The other man then rushed hack and it is alleged lie was also shot.

Li statesmanship, sportsmanship and profession he lias won the right to be considered the equal, if not the superior of the European.

UNEMPLOYMENT ALTADVANCE MELBOURNE,. Nov. 19.

Speaking at the annual conference of the Victorian Association of Ladies’ Benevolent Society, the Chief Secretary said the Government legislation would have to consider legislation to provide unemployment allowances, such as were made in other parts of the world.
