N.S.AV. Y. NEW ZEALAND

/Australian & N.Z. Cable. Association.) SYDNEY, Oct. 30. A light drizzle was falling as Dempster and .Mills opened the New Zealand innings to the attack of Gregory and -McNamee. The early morning rain had not affected the wicket, hut the ball was slippery, necessitating the frequent use of sawdust.

.Mills secured the first boundary of the day, cutting McNamee in bis first over. Both batsmen were shaping well, hut when the total was 3(5 -Mills stopped hack and tell on to the wicket. The runs were coming slowly—less than one each minute. Dempster when 21) had a very narrow escape from stumping off Mailey, Oldfield just failing to gather in the hall. Mailey was varying his deliveries judiciously, and kept the runs down. Everett was also difficult to get away in the face of keep fielding. A combi mil ion of fast and slow howlers eventually tricked Dempster, who when 32. the board reading two for 72. The rain bad cleared and the light improved. Rage got Mailey’s measure early, and drove him repeatedly, several times reaching the fence, and lie passed Dempster’s score a quarter of an hour before lunch. Blunt, after opening with a boundary, became very slow, but later livened up, especially against Mailey. With the last ball before lunch, Pago hit a hard return to Mailey, which was accepted with one hand excellently. The luncheon score was 110 runs for three wickets. Illunt and Dowry carried on attractively, hitting powerfully when the opportunity offered. Mailey required careful attention, but tbe batsmen took few risks. Everett was bowling n consistently good pace, just a snick being required to send him to the pickets. The field, however, stopped many. Lowry, though rather uneasy against Mailey at first, was scoring faster than Blunt. Both secured many from Into cuts, with occasional drives. Blunt brought up bis half century with a nice fine cut to the boundary, and received an ovation, their pair baring added 01. Lowry was skilfully taken at the wickets by Oldfield, and a couple of balls later, without alteration in the total, Mailey caught Blunt, ofl’ McNamee. Illunt batted 101 minutes, and hit four ‘l’s. Ilis was a good all-round exhibition. Dacre and Allcolt immediately attacked the bowling vigorously, to the great delight of tile crowd. Sixteen were scored off one over of Everett. Dacre’s life was all too short, for lie fell to Oldfield, off Gregory’s second ball, with the total at 210 runs for six wickets. Allcott's was the brightest and fastest display of tbe day. He secured bis total by pleasing strokes all round tbe wicket, and was heartily applauded on returning to the pavilion. He occupied the crease fortynine minutes, and hit live Us. The total then was 272 for seven wickets. The remaining three wickets fell quickly, and tbe innings ended with the total 28(5, having occupied 253 minutes. Requiring 285 runs to save an innings defeat, New Zealand followed on. having 45 minutes to play. Mills and Dempster opened, tbe former taking strike to Gregory. When the total was eight, four of which were extras. Gregory clean bowled Dempster. An appeal against the light at 5.30 failed.
