I beg to report the following work was carried out during the month:— Sections of drains in Park, Davie and llrittaii, Sewell St. north. Hampden, Jollie and Hall Sis. were cleaned out, also TTill 1 St. drain between Park and Tudor Sts. was cleaned out to allow the flood water to escape more quickly from the swamp above Whiteombe Square. Coverings were put in at the entrance of Henley and Hull St. drains and the gratings extended to allow the better entrance of the water.

Growth (gorse and blackberries) was cut on Brittan, Hall, Stafford. Duvfo, Rolleston and Sewell St. north Footpaths were cleared and repaired in Stafford St. on the northern side of Cass Square. Jollie St. behind Mr Conning’s, which was damaged on a former flood. The footpath at the rubbish dump on Gibson’s Quay slipped away during the recent rains and linn to he retimbered.

During the month we made fourteen 2ft. Jin. and eleven lft. concrete pipes.

Water in the reservoir averaged Bft Gin. for the month.

FOREMAN’S SPECIAL REPORT. At the request of the Works Committee I hereby tender a report on the flood water, which is causing much inconvenience to Park St. residents. There arc three drains leading out of the swamp on the north-east side of Park St. one in Sale St., one in Hall St. and one in Beale.v St., all three, contracted of eighteen-inch concrete pipes, Healey St. drain being the most taxed of the three, owing to the drainage off Cemetery Hill, directly opposite Bealey St., and in my opinion this drain is much too small to carry away the large quantity of water which occurs in wet weather.

] consider this could he remedied only by larger pipes, or another line of pipes in the same street. The overflow could lie taken with less expense into Fitzhcrljcrt St. drain, but 1 do not think this advisable, as during wet weather this drain is taxed to its uttermost, and it would appear to he only removing the trouble, from one street to another. The work I have been requested to carry out at present, raising the surface of the road, will somewhat relieve the situation. —Received. From Manager Abattoir (J. Jarmail) reporting for May there were examined: —17 cows. 35 heifers, G 5 bullocks, 217 sheep, 37 lambs, 28 pigs, 12 calves. Fees for period £7O 7s (last venr £75 18s).—Received. CARETAKER OF RESERVES. Applications were received irom—A. J. Sumner, R. Herring, H. Douglas, J. Taylor, A. T. Lawson, .Tas. Millner. Mr Herring was appointed at £8 per month.

li was resolved that the Foreman provide ior next, meeting a detailed report of the condition • of the water supply. SPEC IA L MEET ING R EPORT.

That applications he invited for an Acting Town Clerk. That all garages be charged £2 per annum for water supply connection or be charged according to meter. These recommendations as amended were approved. PUBLIC WORKS REPORT. The Public Works Committee met at 2 p.m. on Wednesday Bth instant and recommends as follows: 1. That application by Mr Appleton for water service he approved and Foreman requested to complete same.

2. Application by Mr Caliari for new culvert: That instead of installing a new culvert the Foreman was instructed to raise by three feet the embankment in the Livingstone St. drain where the overflow of Hood waters takes place, thus diverting a considerable quantity of flood water. If tins does not relieve the nuisance, a new culvert in Stafford St. will have to ho installed.
