HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

FRIDAY, MAY 13th. The Council met at 7.30 p.m. Present: —Messrs G. A. Perry (.Mayor), A. R. El cock, J. King, E. W. Keenan, T. AY. Duff, CL Heinz, A. C. Armstrong, AY. Jeffries, D . J. Evans and Dr Tcichelinniin. Notification was received from the Returning Officer of the election of mayor and councillors. The Alnyor and Councillors signed the usual declaration and took their

seats. The minutes were confirmed and out ward correspondence approved. IXWAR-D COR respondents:. From District Highways Hoard notifying result of conference of local bodies at Greyinouth.-—Received ; referred to the new Public Works Committee with power to act and to arrange the quota of the Westland bodies. From -Medical Officer of Health, Christchurch, in reference to contribution towards expenses of Health Inspector.— Received. From Wellington City Council stating the majority of water pipes were of cast iron.—Received. From Invercargill Ho rough Council in reference to water tower cost.—Received. From Conservator of Forests in reference to trapping of opossums and promising every consideration.—Received. From Public Works Officer in reference to tar-sealing of footpaths and approving of proposed charge.—Received. From Treasury stating the subsidy of £SO had been passed for payment in connection with the Duke’s visit.—Received. F com T. H. T ouhey applying for permission to erect kerbside pump.— Received and request granted, subject to conditions, including provision of an insurance indemnity. From Newmans .Motors Ltd and Tlios. Italy to same effect.— Received and granted similarly to above. From Westland Suh-Union asking for the right to use Cass Square on June 3rd for the annual seven-aside tournament: asking if the Council would tar seal a two-loot footpath alongside fence oil playing ground.— Received; right for June 3rd granted on usual conditions; the second request was referred to the Reserves Committee to confer with the Foreman and report. From lunik of New Zealand notifying increase of interest in hank overdrafts to seven per cent. —Received. From Health Officer. Christchurch, approving of installation of two sewer, age tanks.— Received. From Ladies’ Hockey Club asking for use of No. 2 ground on Cass Square for matches.— Received. From llasket Hall Committee to same effect.—-Received : referred to Reserves to confer with two Clubs. From Thos. Coyle, applying lor usual holidays. Received and request granted. From School Committee asking for permission to remove 20 loads of sand for the school garden from Whitcombe Square.-—Received ; referred to Foreman for report. REPORTS. The Treasurer reported receipts £l3B 17s, payments 15101 7s -Id, credit balance £5lO 14s 4d ; loan account credit Ull7 4s.—Received. Accounts amounting to £2BB 10s Id were passed for payment.

FOR EM AN’S REPORT. I I><_•<>; to report the following work \v;is carried out during tlie liiontli. Jollic St. drain. Rollo-ston St. drain. Davie St. drain, a .section of Hampden St. drain and Park St drains were cleaned out and tlie growth cleared from the sides, also a part of Brittan St. drain, the water table on the north side of Cass Square being also cleaned out. Blocks in the pipe drains were cleaned out in Weld, Hampden and Davie Streets.

The section surrounding the totalisator at the racecourse was tar-sealed. Concrete crossings were put in at tlie Railway Hotel and the hack entrance of the Town Hall and in front of the Fire Brigade Station. 'l'ho wooden runners were also removed and concrete put in their place. The water connection was renewed at Davidson Bros.’ foundry. Twenty-seven feet of one-foot concrete jiipe wore put in at the corner of Weld and Brittan Streets near the Central Factory.

Fight 2ft. 3in. concrete pipes were made this month and eight lft. pipes. Several leaks were repaired in various parts of the town.

The water in the reservoir averaged Bft. dins.—-Received. From -J. Jarman (Manager of Abattoirs) reporting during April there were examined 2d cows, 2f heifers, 57 bullocks. 248 sheep, 77 lambs. Id pigs, 12 calves. Condemned: 4 cows, 1 pig. Fees for month £73 (last year C 73 Ids). —Received. APPOINTMENT OF COMMITTEES. Finance. —Whole council. Dr Teicholman to he Chairman. Public Works.—Messrs Hein's, Armstrong. Eleock, King.

Abattoir.—Messrs Jeffries, King, Armstrong.

Reserves Committee.—Messrs Evans, Teichelmann, Heennu and Duff.

Deputy Mayor.—Air Jeffries. LEAVE OF ABSENCE. On the motion of the Mayor three months leave of- absence was granted to the Town Clerk, Air A. A. Andrewes, owing to his continued illhealth. APPRECIATION.

Air Jeffries moved that the Council place on record appreciation of the services of ox-members of the Council.

Air Jeffries proceeded to refer to the important questions affecting the Council, especially the necessity to give attention to the water supply, which was of an urgent nature. There was also the necessity of doing something in connection with the Borough reserves to turn them into a more valuable asset to the town. Air Perry seconded the motion and heartily supported. The motion was agreed to. Mr King moved that the Foreman he asked to supply a special report on the water supply. Seconded by Air Duff and carried. Air Duff referred to the overflow of swamp water in time of flood. He asked that the Foreman he asked to report on the host -means of preventing future flooding.

Mr Heinz said the cause of the flooding was the fact that the grate area at the opening of the drains were not large enough. It was rcsolv.cd that the Foreman report. The question of the Town Clerk submitting a precis of the business of each mooting was deferred. Tho meeting concluded at 8.30 p.m.
