THE GALA DAY

Fine weather prevailed at last for the much postponed function in aid of the Beautifying Society. The afternoon proved very pleasantly line and a large gathering assembled on tho grounds which are now in very attractive order. The hulie.s wore busy at the stalls and in the refreshment room, and appeared to he kept very busy. The presence of the Municipal Band under Mr C. 11. Boss was very acceptable, and a pleasing programme was rendered. School .sports, games ajid competitions were held and occupied a ;eod deal of time. The baby show was a central feature, and Matrons Hamilton and Drummond had quite a formidable task to perform to decide in regard to the various classes. An exhibition of gn.s cooking was given by Mrs Heinz, and a display made of goods cooked by gas. This excited quite an unusual amount of interest. Mrs Urqiihnrt and Miss Urqulinrt had a slendid show of home-made lollies, which wore quickly consumed. Mesdamos Bilkiugton and Hart controlled a well-slocked vegetable stall. Mesdame.-, Parkhill. Benjamin and Stuart were in charge of a pleasantly conducted afternoon tea stall. AH Niven, lion, secretary, was busy directing the sports’ programme and attending to the general details. The young ladies of the Hockey Club kindly acted as gale-keepers. The takings for the day were a little over £4O. The following was the prize list: - - BABY SHOW RESULTS.
