Twenty thousand people watched Princess Mary at Birkenhead try three times t:i break a. bottle of champagne on the hows of R.M.S. Rodney. The battle was suspended by a silken void from the prow. The first time she tried Princess Mary threw very gently and the bottle bounced hack unharmed. On the second occasion she threw more forcibly, but missed the huge target. Ou the third occasion, amid thunderous applause, she succeeded. A platform on which a number of women were accommodated collapsed, and several suffered minor injuries. They were attended to by ambulance men. who were in readiness. Tho bottle which Princess Mary broke was of Imperial Burgundy, which was substituted for champagne for the first time in naval launchings. WAR-TIME CHILDRBN. LONDON, Dec. 19. The headmistress of a large elementary school at Blackburn reports that scholars who spent their infancy during the war time are two indices shorter that the average. Evan Jones of Llanelly, a reputed millionaire, was found hanging from a tree in a quarry near his residence. He began life as a draper’s hoy. Ho became a shipowner, and colliery proprietor.
