The official opening ot the Cecelia Whatman Home, a handsomely constructed, equipped and endowed orphanage, handed over by Mr A. P. Whatman to the Salvation Army, was performed yesterday by the Prune Minister. The building, which will accommodate sixty children, is the latest type of concrete construction, and is surrounded by the managers and schoolmaster’s residences, anil a school house, all erected by Mt Whatman at a cost of £30.000. Besides tin; buildings, the donor luuw endowed the home with £20,000, which produces sufficient for its maintenance. This is not Mr Whatman's first gift to the children of Xew Zealand, as nit a former occasion he gave a beautiful house at the Bay of Islands to the Salvation Army to be used as a children's borne. During the war and post-war period, also, Mr Whatman displayed a commendable spirit ol ecnorositv and loyally, giiing Dec > both money and property for the assistance of returned soldiers.

level crossing SMASH. X A I.MER, December 13. A ear driven by Mrs Harvey Rymer was overturned and was badly smashed at the Hastings Street crossing, in Napier, by a train yesterday morning. The ear turned a somersault in mid-air and was thrown twenty yards. Mrs Rymer was accompanied by her husband, who was hadlv cut about, Mrs Rymer also being considerably knocked about. Doctor Valintiue at a meeting of the Hospital Board said the hospitals in Xew Zealand compare very favourably with any he had seen in Great Britain or Europe, but in view of the depression he had seen in the Old Country, he had come hack from his tour preaching economy at every turn. A man named Mark Webb, employed by the Tamaherc Board, was returning to bis home at 'lawhore lor lunch. When entering his gate, he came into contact with an electric high tension wire, which was down. The unfortunate man was electrocuted, 1 icing killed instantly. Singular to relate. the grandson of Webb, aged seven years, named Norman College, was killed almost at the same instant. He was staying m i t li his grandparents, and had been sent across a paddock to post a letter, and lie also came into contact with the satin- wire just as Mr Webb was entering the gate to his residence. Death was instantaneous in both eases. The bodies were removed to the morgue at Hamilton.
