FRIDAY, JUNE 2Cth. The Council sat at 7.50 p.m. Present : His .AVorship the Mayor (G. A. Perry Esq.), Messrs Coulson, King, Orr, Evans, Jell l ies, Elcock, Heinz, Blank. An apology was made for the absence of Air Parry. The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed. The outward correspondence was approved. INWARD CORRESI’OXDENOE. From Minister of Minos agreeing to treat certain overdue rents as not recoverable.—Received. From Department of Internal Affairs stating .South Hokitika had now been gazetted a.s a. part of AA'estland County.—Received. From Board ■of Health noting Council's decision in regard to Sewell Sl ree t dra in. —Received. From Railway Department in reference to agreement for pipes passing under the railway line.—Received. From I. Brown complaining as to the method of removing night-soil.— Received and referred to the contractor for an explanation. From Hon. H. L. Michel replying he would have pleasure in representing tho Council as desired on deputation regarding Coast road lietween Greymouih°and Westport.—Received. From Registrar of Titles in regard t<, title for Johnstone's right- of way. —Received. The Mayor moved a formal motion claiming the section. Mr Blank seconded. —Carried. From Board of Health offering copy of by-laws.- Received ; copy to be procured. From Fire Brigade in regard to fire plugs. —-Relieved and referred to Overseer, From C. Gibbons applying for annual leave.—Received and granted. From Hokitika Beautifying Society forwarding £29 towards caretaker’s salary. TENDERS. (Jor.se cutting. Sewell Street, J. Milliter £8 (accepted); T. Marks £25. Clearing drain, Sewell Street—A. Detlalf £2O. referred to Public AVorks Committee to have the work done by dav labor. REPORTS. From Treasurer notifying receipts £<>92 Os 7d, expenditure £11(3 2s 3d. Debit balance general account £52 13s 2d ; credit balance loan £973 1-ls sd. Received. From Finance Committee recommending accounts ter payment to tho amount of CHI 12s lid. From Library Committee as follows:

Your committee wish to report that the work of renovating the interior of the Library building is well in hand, under the supervision of Air A. AA 7ilsou. In the newspaper room the ceiling has boon taken out and replaced with fibrous plaster and stained batons. It was found necessary to renew portions of the cross beams at the outer walls, where they were rotten. In this room the outer walls are stripped and ready for repiastcring. In the magazine room the ceiling is completed and the work of plastering is in progess. The work is completed in the Museum room with the exception of the final coat of wash. In the circulating library room tho oiling is almost completed, and the external walls stripped ready for the

plasterers. The committee find that for the. next few days possibly a week it will he impossible to give subscribers the full privileges of the library and propose closing it with the exception of the newspaper room, during the evenings.— Received and adopted. NOTICE OF MOTION. Air Coulson moved:

•‘That Hie tar-sealing of Reve.ll St., from Hamilton St., to Wold St. (as the first section of the work) he proceeded "ilh forthwith.” The mover urged the work, and suggested procuring a plant similar to that in us.’ at Greymoutli. The work could lie proceeded with at once. If not taken in hand soon, the Council would he told there was no loan money left. Mr On- seconded the motion. He .supported the proposal a.s most necessary. Afr Heinz supported the motion. Hitherto the work had been held up for the want of a suitable plant. He thought the plant at Greymouth was too large for local use ai would he too costly. Afr Jeffries heartily supported the motion. He considered Revcll Street needed the attention. The motion was carried. Air Heinz moved that a report bo laid on the table at next meeting as to a tar sealing plant suitable to the town. Afr Coulson seconded. Carried It was agreed that Messrs Blank and Alclvor confer in regard to a plant. The necessary traps and water pipes for connections in Taut-red Street drain were authorised. Some repairs to the abattoir building were authorised a.s urgent. The Council rose at 8.30 p.m.
