SYDNEY, Aug. 10 A campaign to raise locally a ten million loan at (5 per cent, in order to fulfil the financial promises made to the returned soldiers, has been successfully launched. QUEENSLAND COVERNMENT. BRISBANE, Aug. 10 The Governor’s speech at the opening of Parliament was largely colourless, but the Government’s proposals include the following:— Insurance against unemployment.* The widening of the scope of the Workers’ Compensation Act. The extension of the railways to open up both the western and north-western areas. The abolition of capital punishment. An early local loan of three millions. ARCHBISHOP MANNfX. SYDNEY, Aug. 10. Archbishop Mannix has returned here. A big demonstration of welcome W aa to-day tendered to him. The function included a much-be-flaggod procession, in which there were Catholic Societies and also returned Irish soldiers. After Archbishop Mannix left St. Mary’s Cathedral, where he ava* officially welcomed, he was mobbed by an immense crowd. Hundreds of people knelt down ns he passed. TO entertain LORD NORTHCTJFFE. Herr Verbruggen has announced that the orchestra’s future is assured. He also stated that Madame Melba had subscribed £l9O sterling.
