SUMMER MEETING

A DISTINCT SUCCESS,

The Westland Trotting Club was favored with a perfect day for' the summer meeting yesterday, and a highly successful gathering resulted. Thiero was a capital attendance, the fields were good, and the trotting excellent, wi.th some capita! finishes. Speculation was brisk and 31 r H. Lynch and his staff handled the sum of £10,458 for the day for seven races, as against £7,265 for eight races at the summer meeting last year, a substantial increase of £3,193. The various officials were nil in evidence and the meeting passed off without the slightest hitch. The ; races were got off promptly, the starts were well effected by Mr Rutland and the judge was prompt with his de- ; cisions. The course was fairly fast but ' somewhat dusty. The special appearance of Author Dillon caused much interest, the time for the mile being i‘2.11 1-5, a reduction on Cathedral ' Chimes’ time last year. The Town ; Hand was present and enlivened the ' proceedings during the afternoon. Re-

Author Dillon, paced by Silver Shield, j made an attempt to lower the Austrai lasion mile record of 2.-6 1-5. The i t|rack was somewhat holding, and , though the exhibition was a good one till the corner, leading into the straight was reached, the horse made a mistake and broke his gait, losing some time, the mile being completed in 2.11 1-5, or 1-5 less than the time put up by Cathedral Chimes Inst Christmas. AlcGrcgor (Chairman of the Club) expressed the pleasure that the \ visit of Air Jarden and his horse had ' given and complimented him on his I; kindness in giving the exhibition, which the Club deeply appreciated. He expressed the hope that next year, when the track would be found to bo in a greatly improved condition, that they would again ho favored with a visit from Air Jarden. Afr AlcGregor then on behalf of the Club, to inatrk its appreciation presented Airs Jarden (wife of the driver) with a handsome gold necklet and pendant set with pearls, expressing their pleasure in having the lady present. The health of Air and Airs Jarden was then drunk with musical honours and cheers.

Mr Jarden in reply thanked the Club members for their hearty welcome, and kind presentation to his wife. He had been glad to come, but was sorry his horse had made a 'mistake, one he did not often do. He hoped to take advantage of their invitation at a future date, and bring over something that would do letter than he had done that day, not with the present horse, but something that gave promise of better times. He again thanked them for their kind welcome.

Emerald Green was second for most part of the race, but inside the distance broke and Eley got ahead only to mix his gait also,, and Emerald Gyeen again got up in time to secure second place by a hare head. Time 3.57. Tote £1042. WESTLAND TROTH Nil CLUB HANDICAP (in harness) of £l5O, 2 miles. Lord Lytton scr 1 War Lord 10 secs 2 Oratorio llsees. 3 Also started—Palmdale 0, Osier 10, Orange Pippin 16. War Lord led to the distance from Oratorio, Palmdale next. In the Straight Lard Lytton got up in time to win a good race by a length, third two lengths away. Time 4.44 4-5. £I7OB. Golden ‘Pippin stumbled and fell during the race, hut was not hurt.

Wayside led the way to tin* stand, and -hen Rita H. went to the. front and gained a big lend, winning very easily by ten lengths. Blue Drift third. Time 2.27. Tote £1570. DOMINION TROTTERS HANDICAP in harness of £BS, 2 miles.
