The “Daily News” states: Archbishop Chine, believing that all hope of a peaceful Irish settlement had vanished, had applied for passports to Perth. The Premier, hearing of this, sent a message post-has.te asking Dr Clune to return to Ireland to continue his good M work. ( This report is construed to mean thatv. hopes of peace have not vanished. The Military have introduced a new method of punishing disloyalty in Ireland. They have fined the town of Fermoy TIOO sterling as a punishment for tearing down a proclamation. MILITARY AT WORK.

LONDON, Jan. 3 Liverpool police seeking for Sinn Feiners led to the discovery of a quantity of explosives in a house at Edge Hall. The police arrested the father and son. The military forces, after searching a convent at Rangelagh, in County Dublin, opened the grave of one of the nuns who was buried in December. The reason for their action has not been divulged. DE VALERA’S INTENTIONS. NEW YORK, Jan. 3. Air Boland, in the course of a stater ment, says that de Valera lias returned to Ireland contrary to the Dail Eirann’s advicee. He has no intention of communicating with the British Govern, ment, as at first reported. He says the Dail Eirann desired de Valera to remain in America to continue the agitation for Ireland’s recognition by President Harding’s Administration. DE VALERA. (Received This Day at 10.40 a.m.) LONDON, January 4. It is now accepted as true that De Yfalera reached Ireland fast week. It is understood Government does not desire to molest him. On the contrary it is prepart'd to grant him a safe conduct, if his presence will assist peace prospects. The “Daily Express” says the Premier is willing to meet De Valera, if the latter is able to offer tangible results. FURTHER AMBUSHES. (Received This Day at 8.30 a.m.) LONDON, January 5. Six policemen were seriously injured in an ambush in a badly lighted street in Cork city on Tuesday night. The attackers used rifles, revolvers and machine guns. Police fire wounded fire civilians.

An official message states sixteen attackers were killed in an ambush at Weelin and Kanturlc in Comity Cork. The remainder of the attackers, also all guns and ammunition were captured. There were military casualties.
