Thoughts For The Times

The Outlook For Butter

Dairymen have sliown some concern, says the Hawera of a. northern journal regarding a cablegram recently receiveii from London to the effect that butter prices are steadily declining. Mr A. Morton, chairman of the New Zealand Dairy Association, attributes the shrinkage in price to decreased purchasing power on the part of the people at Home. As the Dominion output of butter had been sold under contract till March next, the price hero would not bo affected by any decline in price received in other countries. Mr Morton, referring to future prospects, pointed out that the cheese, meat and wool markets had all experienced a decline, but this had been increased by a surplus of supply over demand. Butter, however was different in that it was still in short supply, and although the purchasing power had diminished at Home, the supply was much below the quantity usually consumed. Mr Morton said he was optimistic enough to believe that though the price might come back somewhat, butter would still keep on top of the primary products, and that a satisfactory price would bo received when the market was free. The price would hardly go below 2s 6d and it might be even more.
