BIG PRICES FOR HIDES. AUCKLAND, March 23. Record prices for Auckland were realised at to-day’s sales, a small parcel of stout ox- hides realising 2s 3d per lb. The price .fixed by the Government for similar glides prior to the adoption of the new regulations ,as to sale was Is lid. The prices for good cow hides ranged from Is 8d to 2s Old per lb. Very heavy skins sold as high as 4s per ib. Very heavy catalogues were submitted including a large percentage of freezing works’ hides, experts express- ' ing the opinion that the selction was j the largest and best that had been offered for some years. Under the new regulations tanners lpve a preemptive right to take whatever hides they require at the price determined at tlie sale. The right was freely exercised tanners claiming nearly all the lots offered after exporters had bid up to their limit.

FREIGHTS ON FJtUIT. WELLINGTON, March 24. As the result of representations made by the Department of Agriculture to the Shipping • Controller, London, it has been'- arranged to charge a stated rate per 40 cubic feet measurement on fruit shipped to the United Kingdom, j insteda of a flat rate per case. It is j expected that this will result in the j saving of Is per case, and possibly i more, as at least 20 to 22 cases, with j full allowance for dunnage, should be ! equivalent to 40 cubic feet of space, whereas the original quotation was evidently based on 18 cases to the same measurement.
