The Prime Minister has been successful in arranging for a conference between the coal mine owners and tlic miners to discuss the points at issue in the dispute at AVaihi. Mr. Massey’s offer of the services of a Conciliation Commssion to ac-t as Chairman of the Conference, has been accepted by both sides. Owing it is added to the iilness of the Commissioner at Auckland, Air. P. Hally, now of the Board of Trade, but formerly Conciliation Commissioner at AVellington, is to act . Air. Halley will leave for the North to-morrow.

The conference will sit at Wailii as sooif as possible. It is understood that each side will be represented by four assissors. JOURNALISTS AWARD. CHRISTCHURCH, March 29. The Journalists’ award provides the same salaries for reporters and readers as in the Auckland and Dunedin awards. The hours for morning papers will be the old Christchurch twelve hour day with a twelve hour break. For evening papers, the Auckland and Dunedin forty eight hour clause is adopted. Sub-Editors are graded, the salaries being eight pounds, six pound ten and five pounds. MAN LOST OVERBOARD. AUCKLAND, March 29. The steamer Joan Craig from Newcastle to Auckland, lost a seaman (name unknown) overboard during heavy weather. She lias put into Russell for medical attention to another man with a broken limb. INFANT DROWNED. PALMERSTON, N., March 29. Yesterday afternoon Henry Jas. Nicholls, the 18 months infant, son of B. J. Nicholls, was drowned in a tub containing Bix inches of water, used for holding gold fish. OBITUARY. GISBORNE, March 29. Captain A. F. Hardy, aged eighty, grandson of Sir Thos. He was also committed for trial for bro>' and entering, stealing clothing r: money from Fantliorpes, Taumarunm and money from AVaimarino rahstation. POLICE FORCE. AVELLINGTON, March 29. Commissioner O’Donovan, (Head of the Police Force) has announced the following promotions and transfers in connection with the Detective Branch of the police force. Detective-Sergeant S. Rawie, who has been doing duty with the local Detective staff for a number of years is transferred to the Uniform Branch with the rank of Sergeant, and given charge of the Greymouth Office. He left to take up his new duties to-day. Detective-Sergeant Cameron, foi many vears in charge of the Invercaigill office, of the Detective Branch has been promoted to the rank of Senior Detective, and transferred to Christchurch. Detective-Sergeant Kemp, of Dunedin, lias also been appointed a Senior Detective, and will remain at his present station. The promotions of Detectives Cameron and Kemp are the first fruits of the recommendation made by the Committee that sat last year for the purpose of adjusting matters as between the Uniform Branch of the service and the Detective Branch. The rank of Senior Detective is equivalent to that of Senior Sergeant in the Uniform Branch. These changes in the detective force will involve transfers and interchanges for many members of the Detective staff throughout the Dominion and it is probable that some of the transfers will not- take place till after the Royal visit. As an outcome of these transfer., the appointment of probationary Detectives to full rank will follow, and additional probationary Detectives will have to be appointed.
