SOUNDS EXCURSION
S.S. PAEROA TO MILFORD
On December 30th, at 2.45 p.m., tho s.s. Paeroa sailed on an exclusion trip to Milford Sound and vicinity, and returned to port this morning, having a full list of passengers, and a very successful outing resulting. A smooth passage was made, and the steamer arrived at Jacksons Bay at 8.45 on tho 31st, where Mr Cuttance was put ashore. At 9.15 a.m. she proceeded on. Cascade Point was passed at 11 o’clock, and at 5.15 p.m. passed into the entrance of Milford Sound, ar-
riving at the head of the Sound at 6.30 p.m. and made fast to the buoy. Saw tbe old year out and the new year in with suitablo honours, rockets being fired and blue lights burned. New Year’s Day was spent in boating, fishing and photographing, some going up the Arthur river ,and others climbing above Bowen Falls. Good
hauls of fish were secured. On January 2nd, sailed from Milford Sound at 5 a.m., and at 11.15 was at north end of Caswell Sound. The weather was clear, and passed entranco of Thomson Sound, and at 1.15 p.manchored at Deal Cove. Good hauls of fish were secured here. At midnigh there, was a heavy gale blowing, and the
vessel dragged both anchors next morning at 7 o’clock. At. noon the gale calmed down, and at’ 4 p.m. sailed for Blanket Bay, arriving at C p.m.. On January 4th, at 4.45 a.m., left tor George Sound, proceeding to the head of the Sound, which was reached at 10 a.m. Stayed there at. anchor for fishing and photographing. A perfect, day. On January sth hove up anchor and sailed for Milford Sound, and reached the buoy at 9.30 a.m. Hero we shot a bullock‘and brought the carcase to the ship. Next day passengers visited tho Sutherland Falls, and on their return sailed ifor Jacksons Bay at 8 p.m. Arrived at Jacksons Bay at 6 a.m. on the 7th, and a party went ashore, others going fishing. Sailed at 12.30 p.m. and stopped at Taumaki Island for fisl'i»g> sailing again at 6.30 p.m. for Hokitika, , arriving at 10.30 a.m. on the Bth after a most successful trip. Good . weather was experienced throughout, , except on night of January 2nd.
