At the Christchurch last week a Christchurch centre of the Piping and Dancing Association of New Zealand was formed. It is the object of the Association, amongst many other matters, to give facullities for tho proper teaching of piping and dancing, and to accomplish this the Dominion Council is trying to arrange for the visit to New Zealand of a number of first-class pipers and dancers. T'hese will be assisted to find employment at their trade in the various towns, and then undertake their teaching duties in their own time. The Association is -aho writing to good Scottish singers and capable public speakers to advance the wide aims and objects of tho Association. A sensational incident occurred in the Auckland harbour on Monday. As the Wakatere was bound for Thames she ran down and cut in two a dinghy anchored about 300 yards off Devonport. The occupant of the dinghy, Mr Henry |R. Hobson, a railway guard, was Billing when lie saw the Wakatere approaching dangerously near. Realising that a collision was inevitable he threw off his coat, dived overboard, and swam clear. He was picked up by a rowing boat and taken ashore none the worse for his immersion. Air Hobson lost ids coat with its contents and bis fishing gear, which he valued at £2/10/-. The dinghy, which was broken to pieces was valued at £ll. The Wakatere stopped, but after ascertaining that Air Hobson was safe proceeded on her way.
