The death occurred on Sunday at the residence of his sop, Mr J. S. Barrett, Bealey avenue, Christchurch, of Mr John Barrett, an old colonist who was widely known and highly esteemed in Canterbury and Westland. Mr Barrett was born at Roscommon, Ireland. 83 years ago. He came out to Victoria in 1859, and worked on the gold diggings. In 1862 lie came across to New Zealand and took part in gold rushes in Otago and on the West Coast. Mr Bar ,rott came to Christchurch in 1875. when he became the proprietor of the hotel now known as the Excelsior. Jn 1889 lie brought the Kirwee homestead, which lie fanned sucessfully until his retirement twelve years ago, when again took up his residence in Christchurch. Mr Barrett took a great interest in politics and whilst living at

Kir woe Tie, unsuccessfully contested tlie Courtenay scat, Mr Barrett leaves one son, Mr J, S- Barrett the well-known solicitor.
