QUEEN CARNIVAL,

Events in connection with the local queen carnival have kept going merrily during the past week, the chief events being the concert in aid of the East End candidate on Friday evening, and the sale iri aid of the West End candidate on the same afternoon. Besides these events the West End held a house party at Mr E. Gibbons's residence on Monday evening, and the East End held a dance in the Parish Hall, Kaponga, on Tuesday. The concert.given by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Association on Friday evening drew a crowded house, and was greatly appreciated by the large audience present. At the conclusion of the concert Mr A. Sadler, chairman of the East Eoid Committee, thanked the performers for their assistance, and Mr W. \V. Lonsdale, president or the Lancashire and Yorkshire Association, thanked the chairman for hiß kindly remarks and the audience for. the excellent hearing given them. After the concert dancing was indulged in and kept going till well into the morning. Many .really gooa jokes were indulged in, and tssides the funny business of Sambo, Ralph gave an item on the violin, accompanied by Reuben on the piano, after which Reuben sang the plantation song "Omaha," being accompanied by his pals on the violin and banjo. Sambo's items included the very amusing one of "If you want to keep your wife at home never let her learn to Jazz." The next item was "O Star of Eve," by the Lancashire Jazz Band, at the conclusion of which several boys came upon the platform with tin instruments in imitatation of a jazz band. After the above interlude, the next item was a duet, "Battle Eve," by Mrs Hook and M<r W. W. Lonsdale. Song (in costume), "In her Clogs and Shawl," Mrs Birtwistle. This was a very nicely rendered item, in which the singer was dressed in the orthodox clogs, shawl and apron of the Lancashire mill girls and carried a shuttle in her hands, which she threaded as she sang.
