CARPENTIER v. GIBBONS.

Carpentier's weight,was announced as 1741b and Gibbons' as 1771b. A telegram from Dempsey challenging the winner was read. In the first round Carpentier shot heavy rights to the head and drove to the body. In a clinch he swung a right to the chin. The men were boxing cautiously. Gibbons' left hooked to the chin. Carpentier, backing away, Gibbons drove Both fists to the body. Carpentier fended a hard right on the head of Gibbons, who left hooked to the chin and chased Carnentier around the ring.

In round two Gibbons forced Carpentier to retreat. Carpentier missed with the left, and' Gibbons pounded his body in clinches. Gibbons drove Carpentier into a corner, and Carpentier smashed a left to the face and received two left hooks to the chin, and danced away from Gibbons' rights and lefts. In round three Gibbons missed with the left, and Carpentier landed flush on the jaw with the right. Gibbons sent a right to the chin, and Carpentier ran into a corner. Gibbons, pursuing, landed a left. Carpentier left hooked to the stomach. In round four the fighters clinched. Carpentier backed away, but suddenly lashed out to the chin. Gibbons backed Carpentier into a corner, and punished' him on the head and body. Carpentier dropped a teft to the face, and received two lefts to the chin in return. Carpentier landed a left on the chin. Gibbons dodging a right swing. Gibbons landed two lefts on the jaw, and Carpentier missed a right i to the jaw. j I'm round five Carpentier began re- i treating, and Gibbons hooked a left to ; the head. Carpentier caught Gibbons : with two rights on the head, and Gibbon® drove Carpentier into a corner. Tn the sixth round, landing body piiraehes, Gibbons landed' two lefts on the head and a right to the ribs. The ffghters exchanged fepdy blows in eftnches. In the seventh round Gibbons rocked Carpentier's head irroh two left uppereuts, and- whipped v6ver a right to the head, forcing his opponent to hang on. Gibbons drove Carpentier into a rorner with a right to the body, and Gibbons landed three rights to the .head, making Carpentier groggy, Carpentier hanging on at the bell. In round eight they clinched, Carpentier hanging on and punching the body. Gibbons sent a left to the head, drove two lefts to the body, a right to the stomach, and another to the stomach as he backed away. Carpentier hooked a savage right to the head. In round nine Carpentier sent over a light left. Gibbons elinehed, and they exchanged rights to the body. Carpentier sent two rights to the face, and then fell to the floor, indicating that he had hurt his ankle. Carpentier limped around, and Gibbons drove two rights to the body. They clinched, and Gibbons landed five rights to the body, Carpentier hanging on. Carpentier became groggy, but lashed out two rights, which missed Gibbons. Laughing, Gibbons drove a right to the chin. Carpentier limped to a corner, the crowd jeering. They shook hands. In the tenth round Carpentier retreated to the ropes, and Gibbons wing hooked a left to the body, and Carpentier clinched and was noticeably limping. Gibbons hooked a left to the chin and cut Carpentier over the eye. Car pentier backed, and Gibbons punchec him with rights and lefts to the head Carpentier missed a right and left tx the body.
