HIGH RENTS

(To the Editor.) Sir,—l notice that Mr W. T. Wells states, in reply to my letter of ■ the above heading, that he cannot quite make it out. I see he talks of land that carries a cow to two acres, whereas the 106-acre farm I speak of'carries' a cow to an acre and a half, or a total of 67 cows. Then take Mr Wells' figures of an average of 2751b butterfat per cow (which I consider a fair average), say, at Is 3d—£l7 3s 9d, a total for the 67 cows of £1151 11s 3d. The profit on pigs should be about £80, or about £1 5s per cow, and calfskins £20. Allowing a third of the milk returns £383 for labour, and paying rent £530, and rates £40, it leaves him a balance of £297 16s for interest, losses, etc. Say butter-fat at Is 6d gives him an additional £230 per year. Thanking you in anticipation.—l am, etc.,

MRS A. WILLCOCKS,
