INCREASE IN DOMINION

The population of the Dominion, on December 31, according to the Government Statistician's gazetted estimate, was 1,394,468, made up as follows: New Zealand proper (excluding Maoris), 1,289,233; Maoris, 53,800; Cook Islands and Niue, 13,445; Western Samoa, 37,990. The net increase during the year- in- New Zealand proper was 23,836, made up of: Excess of births over deaths, 16,468; escese of arrivals over departures, 7369,
