SPORTING.

NOTES AND COMMENTS.

(By Maecenas.)

Listowel will make his debut as a jumper at the forthcoming Wanganui meeting.

Thespian has been responsible for excellent work at Wanganui, and was looked upon as unbeatable at Marton.

The grass was long and the track somewhat heavy at Marton, and these factors helped to • bring about the* defeat of Thespian, who, though defeated, ran a good race under a big weight. Sunny Vale was not sent to the Marton meeting, but will be a ranner at the Wanganui gathering.

Avola will make her nest appearance at Wanganui, where the speedy daughter of JBisogne is engaged each. day.

The chance of Valencia was favoured by his connections at Marton on Wednesday, and with any luck on his side he may have paid a dividend.

After his moderate showing at Marton, I'Amour will lose many admirers for his Avondale Cup engagement.

Cold Steel was a long way back in the early stages of the Marton Handicap. He was well placed at the home turn, but failed to finish on.

Miss Mickey ran a really good race in the concluding event at the Marton meeting and, finishing well, she was just behind the placed division at the post.

Soliform, one of J. Jamieson's pupils, showed a lot of pace at Marton, and is worth remembering for future events.

In the early stages of the Hack Hurdles at Marton on Wednesday, Captain Sarto lost a lot of ground, but over the last half-mile he went exceptionally weii.

Speculation was very "dead" at the Marton Jockey Club's spring meeting, thus proving that the financial barometer is still unsteady.

J. Dombroski (who is attached to C. Jackson's stable at Hawera) rode a very nice race on ArcK Salute when that gelding won the Marton Handicap, and never covered a foot more than was necessary.

A rider in the Marton Handicap on Wednesday last, was rasponpible for palpable interference with a couple of the opposing horses, and both Demos and Arch Salute got bad bumps from his mount.

The English-bred Podokes, until recently trained at Ellersiie, is now under J. T. Jamieson's care at Woodville.

The imported Drawbridge made his debut to the racing public «t Marton, but was in no condition to do himself justice. He is a nicely turned colt.

, The three .leading two-year-old fillies, Queen March, Tukia. * and Razzle Dazzle, were all engaged in the Wanganui Guineas, but Razzle Dazzle may be the only one to run in that event.

Reremoana stopped quickly at the North Taranaki Hunt Club meeting, and on this showing can have little chance with Razzle Dazzle and Suggestion in the Wanganui Guineas, although the lack of a race may be detrimental to the last-named pair. .^ Suggestion is doing exeeffMt work at Wanganuj, but was obviously backward when sent there; so if Razzle Dazzle strips at all well she must be hard to dispose of in the Wanganui Guineas, as she showed staying qualities last season

Veil is going exceptionally well on the Wanganui tracks, and her connections give her an excellent chance in' the open Flying to be run at Wanganui on Thursday next. This sister to Rational has plenty of pa«>. Listowel looked a picture when sent out to contest the chief event at the Marton-meeting. He led to the turn, at which stage the son of Absurd was going easy, but over the last part of the race Listowel gave up without a struggle.

Although rather robust at present, Fleeting was given a chance by her owner at the North Taranafci Hunt blub meeting. She was very slow to mid her feet and never threatened danger.

At present Snatcher is carryino- a lot of condition. The brother "to Anomaly was a runner in the Railway Handicap at Marton on Wednesday, but ran very badly. He may be tried over a distance of ground in the future Uhen Mark Time went out for the chiet event at the Marton meetino- he earned more condition than at any previous time of his racing career Jumping off well, the son of King Mark went well for a distance, but, of course was short of work and will do better later.

, Had Admiral Codrington succeeded m beating Arch Salute in the Marton Handicap he would have returned his supporters a remarkably large price when one remembers some of the good races lie has run.

l<or some reason I'Amour was looked an as unbeatable in the Marton Handicap, and was backed down to an absurd price, while all the other runners (some of which have good performances to their credit) were absolutely neglected on the" totaJisator. ' Like several other competitors in the event, l'Amour got a bad passage and met with a couple of slight checks but on the day it is doubtful if Kilbron&y's son could have beaten Arch Salute. Ihe imported sire Paper Money is t° g^ a great chance to make good in this Dominion, and his list is full for the coming season. . Included in the mares booked to him are the following: Simper (dam of Affectation, Gflld Light, and Razzle Dazzle), Bebe (dam of Cupidon). Ukraine (dam of Sasanof), Secret Link (dam of Silver Link), also such well-bred ones as Impediment, Pierene, Isabel, Bonny Helen, 80-peep, Afterglow, etc. Given such opportunities, it would indeed be strange if something $ood did not come of such unions.
