At the meeting of the County Council to-day it was agreed that the road known locally as the Lewis Road, in iN'olantown, be officially gazetted as Mason Road, in view of the fact that Mr Mason had been the pioneer settler in that area. When considering the question of the formation of special rating areas, the clerk of the Hawera County Council said that the occupier of native land could be included in a petition for rating for a special area if the occupier had a confirmed lease. During renovations at the White Horse Inn, Shere, near Guildford, an old roof of. wattle, and daub was discovered. The ceiling at the top of the stairs had been partly removed for a skylight to be placed in the roof, when • the workmen found .sloping un from about the level of the ceiling the wattle and daub roof, about 12ft below the main roof. The clay in this roof is of a lecal soil, containing a large amount of chalk. The long, thin hazel twigs and the stouter cross pieces are remarkably well preserved. It is considered by antiquaries that the roof must have been built in the fourteenth century or earlier, and covered up between 250 and 300 years ago. The question, of native rates and their collection propped up at the Hawera County meeting to-day. The chairman said they were coming, out well and the county clerk had adopted methods which were ensuring much greater collections of these rates. The clerk said he was of the opinion, however, +hat not much more would be received until February, when rents were paid out. He had got the notices printed in Maori and this had materially helped. , Commenting on the report that the first group of 2000 shares of the Northern Co-operative Terminating Building Society, Auckland, comprising 2000 shares, was oversubscribed in one day, the Palmerston North Times says that the Auckland rules are based on those of the Manawatu Co-operative Building Society, Palnlerston North, which &as also had a splendid public response. ( Dr. P. G. Morgan contributed a paper at the Science Conference in Sydney on the petroliferous areas of New Zealand, in which he stated that a large part of New Zealand was covered by strata which in some part or other might possibly yield oil. Seepages of oil, gas emanations, andi otner indications of petroleum had been found in many localities. The chief of these were: (1) Kotuku, in North Westland, where a few hundred barrels of oil had been obtained from shallow bores; (2) near New Plymouth, Taranaki, where numerous bores had yielded possibly 50,000 barrels of oil; and (3)" the Gisborne East Cape district, where bores had been drilled in various localities, but only a trifling productibn had* been obtained. There were various drawbacks to the efficient prospecting of the New Zealand areas, and only financially powerful concerns,, employing experienced geologists and drillers, should undertake further urosoecting. Much of, in fact nearly all, the drilling done in the Dominion had been futile, partly owing to lack of capital, and more largely because of lack of experience. The composition of the oils discovered in i New Zealand was outlined by Professor 1 Easterfield. who said geologists in New Zealand still had, hopes that oil would be produced in some parts of New Zealand as an economic proposition.
