TENNIS.

in common with other sports, enthusiasts in tennis will be getting out their gear preparatory to a new season's play, and, annual meetings over, will look forward with keen enthusiasm to the opening day. Hawera is very well set up with courts, play being available on the courts of three clubs. All promise to be in first-class order this season.

The failure of the Australians.brings out in strong relief the wonderful play of the Australian, Brookes, and his New Zealand nartneiy Anthony Wilding, who won. in 1907, 1908, 1909, 1911 and 1914, and of the Australians* in 1920. Australia - now has six wins, America five, and England four.

The Australians had some strenuous contests before meeting the Americans in the finals, and almost went down to one of the European teams. They managed, however* to survive the preliminaries, only to be beaten almost out of sight by the States champions. Contrary to expectations, Anderson beat Johnston, whereas Tilden, whom he beat decisively last year, proved this week much too strong, and besides beating him made no race of Hawkes, 'and combined with Johnston, to win the doubles also. Hawkes was. known to be the weak man. It would appear to have been a good opportunity to try a younger man, who would hare had just as much chance and to whom the experience would mean, a great deal.
