IN WESTLAND.
The scarcity of labour is delaying the erection of the big central factory in Hokitika, says an exchange, but it is expected that dairy operations -will be possible by the middle of September, and fully so by October 1. The bacon side of the dairy industry will l>e specially catered for by the freezing equipment. The pig branch had to depend solely in pre-tunnel days oil the small local market. The dairy output this year is estimated at 130 to 150 tons, 1500 cows being promised from the districts from Kumara to the Waitaha. In this ai'ea, inclusive of Kokatahi. about 5000 cows are now being milked, and the local factory is now being erected with-provision for the future. The cream will be collected by motor lorry an all factories from Kumara southwards. This past year the. output was about 400 tons, valued at approximately £85,000.
