RETAIL PRICES.
INDEX FIGURES AS AT JULY 15
The index number for the three food groups as at July 15 is 1520, a decrease ot one point since the previous month, and an increase of 42.<A> ncr cent over cy A 19*4 states the August Abstract of Statistics). The increase of three points in. the groceries groun has been caused mainly by a rise in the orioe of potatoes in several towns. A considerable fall in the price- of eggs in most towns has been tlie cause of the fall of 24 points in the dairy products group. Increases in the prices of mutton and pork in several towns has caused' a rise of nine points in, the meat group. The latest available figures for the principal countries, compared with July, 1914, give the following percentage increases in the retail prices of food for the months stated: South Africa, April, 1923, 17; United States, April, 1923, 40; Canada, May, 1923, 40; New Zealand, July, 1923, 42; Holland (Amsterdam), March, 1923, 45; India (Bombay), May,. 1923, 48; Sweden, May, 1923, 61; United Kingdom, July, 1923, 62; Australia, July, 1923, 64; Denmark, January, 1923, 80; Norway, May, 1923, 114; France (Paris), May, 1923, 225; Belgium, May, 1923,. 314; Italy (Rome), April, 1923. 381; Finland, March, 1923, 966; Germany, April, 1923, 461,900.
