FOOTBALL.

APPOINTMENT OF REFEREES

<BY TELEGBAPB. —rRESS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND, Sep. 6. The question of the appointment of referees in interprovincial matches was discussed by the Auckland Rugby Union last evening. The New Zealand Union notified that Mr. C. Atkinson, of Wanganui, had been appointed to referee for the Auckland v. New South Wales match, to be played in Eden Park on Saturday. .

It was resolved to protest against the system of appointing referees from outside provinces! for local matches, as there was a number of local referees available.

It was further resolved to draw the attention of the New Zealand Union to the statement reported to have been made by Mr. C. Atkinson at a dinner after the Hawke's Bay-Canterbury match: "The Jeremiahs of Wellington and Auckland are growling that our football is going back, but you will meet Auckland in a few weeks, and if you don't kick them off the field, I don't know."
