Saturday was the seventy-first anni"versary of the first publication of the "Taranaki Herald, which made its appearance on August 4, 1852. A five-DOund note lay on the steps •of "the Bank of New Zealand,. Christchurch, for a few minutes on Thursday. It had been dropped by a clerk as he came out of the bank, and was tramped -on by several people who did not realise ;-that there was a small goldmine betieatlT their feet. The clerk- who had ■dropped it returned in a hurry, and was just in time to retrieve it in front of an office boy who was too dazed by his good luck'to act quickly.
