ENTERTAINMENTS.

"SCANDAL."

A most interesting performance was the presentation of the popular play •Scandal by an excellent band of artists, headed by the brilliant young actress Doris Duane, and the clever English comedy actor Eric Harrison. Doris Duaue. as the spoilt girl who disregarded convention in order to save herself from a compromising situation, gave an interpretation of a difficult character that served to show to the full the excellence of her dramatic work. Her gay buoyancj' and delightful personality made her a great favourite with her audience. Eric Harrison as Pelham Franklin, whose life is bound up with-that of Beatrice Yanderdyke through her foolishness, acted the part to the life. He showed a fine, manly and likeable .temperament that was altogether attractive. The rest of the characters were all very capably portrayed, the whole making a performance that pleased all the audience. It was a capital performance throughout. would have to be placed on the railway. I Mr. Meldon also mentioned that Manaia had recently gone in for a water and drainage ■scheme, which had cost £30,000, and a number of people had bought sections thinking they would get money from the Government for building houses. Mr. Meldon asked that this money should be made available. The Minister said that he would refer the matter to the Minister of Finance, and that a reply would be sent to their member, Mr. Hawken. Mr. MePhillips asked for Government assistance in the rebuilding of the Otakeho bridge. He mentioned that the County Council had been building bridges during the last eight or nine years at the rate of 1£ a y*ar. This year they wer^ faced with the building of two bridges and assistance from the Government was required. The council wanted to straighten the bridge as far as their resources would allow.
