LIQUOR LAWS

DECISION BY UNITED STATES

GRAVE CONSEQUENCES

BY CABLE—PEBBB ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHU LONDON, May 2. The decision of the. United States that no liquor will be permitted within the three mile limit is regarded in British shipping circles as. fraught with grave consequences, among which is suggested greater use of Canadian ports by the big trans-Atlantic liners. The opinion in Southampton is that the only course open for foreign vessels isto dump their liquor stocks outside the three mile limit, but it is pointed out that this measure would be most inconvenient. The decision will inevitably disturb the whole ocean passenger service between Europe and the United States. It is expected the Majestic will leave Southampton on Tuesday with the usual supply. It is stated the Mejestic requires for the round voyage eightythousand bottles of ale and stout, fifteen thousand pints of champagne, ten thousand pints of other wines, four thousand bottles of whiskey and other spirits, and three thousand bottles of liquers. Liverpool strongly resents the American decision, and favours calling on the outward and inward voyages at a convenient Canadian port to there discharge and reload the usual liquor supply. Other suggestions in shipping quarters are to transfer the liquor outside the limit to liners returning, or to run westward with only sufficient for the outward journey, returning "dry,"' but difficulties would arise regarding transfer in bad weather, while there is objection on the ground of lost time and expense in calling at a Canadian port. In the meantime, Government circles await an official intimation of the decision. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
