Professor H. S. Dettmann, of Auckland University College, who has been appointed headmaster of the Sydney Grammar School, was born at Bathurst. New South Wales, in 1875, and received his education in Sydney. In 1897 he graduated B.A. .at Sydney University, with first-class honours in English, German, Latin, and Greek, being English prize-man and proxime accessit to the medallist in. classics. 'He was later awarded the first Woolley travelling scholarship, and continued his studies at Balliol College, Oxford, where he graduated 8.A., M.A., and JS.C.L-, being classical exhibitioner. For many years he was a master on the staff of Sydney Grammar School, and acted for a year as professor of classics at Adelaide University, from which institution he received the honorary degree of M.A. In 1908 he iva« appointed to his present position •as professor of classics at Auckland 'University College. He is now chairman of the professorial board of the college, a member of the Senate of the University of New Zealand, vice-chair-man of the board of governors of King's College, and chairman of the board of governors of King's School. Professor Dettmann has taken a keen interest in cricket, and for some years pla3-ecl for the University. He is at present chairman of the management committee of t>e \\ ncldand Cricket Association. He has always been popular \vH,^ the staff and students of the TTni- ! vemtv, where he is famed for geniality and characteristic wit. Although Pro-fer-so'- T>ettmann is scheduled to commence his new duties on June ]. he has cabled to~Svdney askinp- that the time V extended to pp.n timber.
