ALLEGED BIGAMY
AN ELTHAM CASE
A charge of bigamy against George Dives and Elizabeth Bishop, of Makaka, was called in the Magistrate's Court at Eltham on Monday before Mr A. M. Mowlem, S.M. Dives was charged with going through a form of marriage with Elizabeth Bishop, well knowing that her husband, Ernest Bishop, was alive, and Elizabeth Bishop was charged that, j having been married to Ernest Bishop in 1911, she went through a form of marriage with Dives. Dives was further charged on five separate counts with making false declarations to the registrar of births that Elizabeth Bishop was the mother of five children born to Dives, and that she was married to Dives in Luton, England, in September, 1912. Dives appeared in -answer to the charges, but was not represented by counsel. Elizabeth Bishop did not appear. i Sergeant Henry said that the woman • was in a delicate state of health, and was unable to appear until after her confinement. He asked that each accused be remanded from week to week until Bishop was able to appear. A remand was granted accordingly, Dives being allowed bail in his own recognaisance of £25. —Aus.-N.Z.
