BIG PRODUCERS AND EATING.
WHAT FACTS REVEAL
Cows that produce milk and buttertat in large quantities have keen appetites and roomy paunches, but they bring in higher incomes over feed cost than the scanty producers, regardless of breed, age, weight, date of freshening, and geographical location. This is one of tlie important points brought out in Department Bulletin 1069, Relation of Production to Income from Dairy Cows, by J. C. McDowell, just published by the United States Department of Agriculture. The facts in the bulletin ire based on a study of data suprlied ty 96 cowtesling associations in various parts cf the country. Because of better feeding, better breeding, and better' care, cows owned by association members are much better than the general run of cows. The estimated production per head of all the dairy cow 3in the United States is approximated 400-j lbs of milk and 160 lbs of butteVfat a year. The association cows are about oO per cent, better, producing an average of 6077 lbs of milk and 248 lbs of butter-fat. I
According to figures based on 18,014 yearly individual cow records, as but-ter-fat production increased from 100 lbs to 400 lbs there was a regular increase of about £3 4s 2d in income over teed cost per cow for every 501b of increase in average production of butterfat. As the yield of butter-fat increased from 109 lbs to 396 lbs the returns above the dollar expended for feed increased from ls ssd to 6s 4d. The cows having an average milk production of 3250 lbs showed an average income of £6 9s 4M over the cost of feed, while those producing 13,250 ibs showed an average income of £43 13ai 4d over feed cost. The cows in the latter group produced about four times as much as those in the other group and their average income over cost of teed was nearly seven times as great The increase in income above feed cost grew regularly with the increase in production.
