New Year's Day is one of the holidays when people mostly get away te . some attraction that appeals to them .• On Monday there will be several such. events in. the district, and each will draw those who are interested in that • sport. At Stratford the popular race meet - - in g will be held on Monday and continued on Tuesday. The racing at. this meeting is always good, and large fields always start in the various -. races, making good sport for patrons of .: the turf. There are bound to be big-; crowds at Stratford 'from all over the * district on both days. Special trains •< will run, leaving Hawera ait 9.45 a.m, and returning from Stratford at 6.10" ;1 p.m. This will be of great interest to - racegoers. On Tuesday the ordinary 7.20 a.m. mail train New Plymouth to-* Wellington will not take passengers -- from Stratford, Eltham, Hawera, and Patea, or any station Stratford to--Feilding, inclusive. Passengers from : Stratford, Eltham, Hawera, Patea. - etc., must travel by. the relief maiJ '' train, leaving Stratford 7.52 a.m., Eltham 8.6, Hawera 8-40, Patea 9.23, Waverley 9.45, Waitotara 10.3, WeJlington arrive 6.21 cm. The proprietor of the Ngaere Gardens cater( s for the public, and will put on special attractions. These gardens are very beautiful, and .combine native - bush and planted gardens and shrub- - beries. There are features of interest • to all. and these never fail to draw crowds of visitors. Special train ar- - rangemtmts are advertised which will ' be very convenient. _ Very special attractions are advertised for the Waingongoro beach en Monday, where a grand gala day is - being arranged. The event is for a very useful purpose, and deserves the • heartiest support of all townspeople • and of people from the surrounding district, many of whom use the beach-, regularly. • On Tuesday there will be a cricket , attraction, when North and South i Taranaki will play their annual fixture '\ at Hawera. Both teams are well . representative of their district, an#. should give a good display of crieket. Bowling greens will both be actively engaged. On the Hawera greens Wai- - tara rinks will try conclusions with a Hawera Club team, and on Tuesday the first Syme Shield inter-club match will be played on the Hawera green. The Park green will be open on Mon- - day. No matches have been arranged, but a tournament may be ne^L On Tuesday the club will take part itf the Syme Shield matches. Special picture programmes are ncitified by the management- of the Hi* wera theatres, and these draw larg«| • houses.
