: $ j (From Our Own Correspondent.) . CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. ! The monthly meeting of the Chamber _of Commerce was held in the Ladies' Rest Room on Wednesday evening. There were present: Messrs. Bridger (president), Clare, Fountain, | Payne, and Bilton (secretary). Apoloi gies were received from Messrs C. L Wilson and O. Manley. j _ The nightwafehman reported that i there were a large number of business | premises and doors that need atteni tion. The report was received, on the motion of Messrs. Fountain and Payne. ' A letter was received from' Mr. Hawken, M.P., and the chief district enI gmeer with reference to the erection of a new and extra telephone line to New Plymouth. Appreciation was expressed at the satisfactory nature of I the report, and it was decided to write j thanking the member for Egmont, the district engineer, and the Department for their favourable and prompt action. A letter was received from the I Tourist Department with reference to a regular motor service to the moun- j tain during the holiday season. It was resolved that this council, appreciated the importance of the service, and will do all in their power to arrange same satisfactorily. The details; were left with the president to arrange. Mr. R. Payne brought up the question of a 4 o'clock postal delivery to the business area. It was decided to approach the postmaster, with a request that same be established. The secretary reported that a large number of the nightwatehman's subscribers had not paid their subscriptions to date, and it was decided that all such subscribers be written to. The president stated that an appeal for an increase in the nightwatehman's salary had gone out, and replies were expected in a few days. Speeding up" Mail-Train: A letter was received from New Plymouth and Stratford Chambers of Commerce re this matter, and it was decided, on the motion of the president and secretary, that this meetnig strongly supports the suggestion re speeding up the New Plymouth.-Wellington express by cutting out such, stops as Bell Block, Midhirst, Normanby, and Ball Road. The matter of street stalls and solicitation for the purchase of goods and tickets was brought up for consideration, and it was decided that this was not' in the best interests of the business community, and i;hat the matter be referred /to the Borough Council for consideration. v
