UNIONISTS' ATTITUDE.

PARTY WANTS INDEPENDENTS. Received Oct. 20, 10.10 a.m. LONDON, Oct. 19. Mr. Chamberlain, at the Carlton ? Club, explained the position of himself and his colleagues in the Cabinet who desire the present Coalition. Mr. 'Chamberlain was given a patient hearing, but it was obvious that his cxv planations did not satisfy the meeting. ■ /Mr. Bonar Law advised the meeting $0 declare in favour of independence ; as the surest way of preventing, a cleaviage in the Unionist Party. The speech : made a profound impression. Lord Balfour spoke in favour of the - Coalition. Mr. Baldwin and Lord Boscawen regretted that they could not follow, Mr. Chamberlain's leadership. Mr. Eretyman moved that the Unionists should fight the elections as an in- • dependent party, under their own programme and their own leader with a proviso for a Coalition with the Liberals if the Unionists were so advised Tby their leader. This was carried. It is understood that Viscount Peel, Mr. -Baldwin, Sir A. Griffith HoScawen, Colonel Leslie Wilson, Mr. Amery, '. Major Lloyd Graeme, and Sir J. L. Baird have resigned from the Government. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. • ■ ,
