~ ♦ HALF-YEARLY MEETING. The half-yearly meeting of the Taranaki branch of the New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers was held in the Borough Council Chamber, Stratford, on Tuesday. i The following members attended: Messrs T. M. Ball, resident engineer, of Public Works (in the chair); O. G.; Thornton, P.W.D., Kapuni; J. W. Spence, B. H. Homer, Stratford; G. \ AY. King, Patea; L. C. Sladden, New, Plymouth: C. H. Lawn (hon. secre-i tary), P.W..D., Stratford; M. Fitzgerald, county engineer, Eltham, at-j tended by invitation. Apologies were1 read from Messrs Cook, Stuxroek, Pear-j less, Furkert, Climie, Lee, and Dowsett. I Reports showed that there were noweighteen members in the district. Other j branches in the Dominion were in a healthy condition and active, there being mutual exchange of papers read at, various meetings. The chairman took' the opportunity to welcome Mr. G. W. King, lately appointed county engineer, Patea, to the district. It had been the intention of the members to visit the Te Wera quarry, lately opened up by the Public Works J Department, but, owing to the inclem-j ency Of the weather, the visit had toj be abandoned. Mr. Ball, resident en-! gineer, read a short sketch, describing the initial work at the quarry, detailing plant and machinery. Plans and photographs were exhibited. There was! a short discussion on the subject. As, Brewer Road tunnel was also to have been visited, Mr. C. H. Lawn, office engineer, P.WIX, read a short sketch; and exhibited plans describing the design of the concrete arch lming which had been placed in the tunnel, and outlining the method of work. A short discussion took place regarding the method used, and Mr. Ball further described details. A general discussion on lining road tunnels proved very inter-! esting. . | Mr. Lawn also gave some details regarding the Stratford town bridge now under construction in reinforced concrete, exhibiting plans and details. —' News. - J
